Saga Elves

The imminent arrival of Saga: Age of Fantasy has got me all excited. I decided that this would be a great opportunity to finish a long-abandoned GW Elf army I had in the loft. I have a regiment of Swordmasters to do, yet, and then that should make a decent saga warband.

Apparently the warbands are 8 points. From what I have heard, the chariot would work as a war machine which costs half a point (I think you have to buy them by exchanging them for 2 hearthguard or 4 warriors, etc). I painted a tree which would work as a Titan monster, which costs the same, afaik. The ballista things are also war machines. And the wizard costs a point, and gets his own spell deck. I also have a dragon to finish off which would work as a different type of monster.

I can probably use my archers as 1 point of levy or 2 of warriors, and my spears work as 2 points of warriors. With 3 points of Swordmaster hearthguard, this should make a decent-size, versatile force for one of the Order factions (probably the Great Kingdoms one).

Another S&SF Tournament

We had another S&SF mini-tournament at the club. I brought my Undead this time, thinking maybe they were probably a bit overpowered, under the rules. My first game went well enough against the Elves, and I managed to use my superior magic to my advantage.

I played a friendly game against Orcs and that was pretty even. Then I played against my nemesis Barbarian Horde and got out-flanked and rolled up by their superior numbers pretty quickly. It looked like I was going to get properly massacred, but with a few lucky rolls (and the Undead resilience - all rallying is done at 4+), managed to end up with a respectable defeat.

Hint for those wanting to organise a tournament, work out what system you are using to determine the winner before it starts! Had we used a '3 points for a win' system, Nick's Meerkats would have won; had we used a  'goals scored' system Carole's Barbarians would have won; and had we used a 'goal difference' system, my Undead would have won.

Stargrunt NSL

I painted an NSL Jaeger faction from GZG for Stargrunt. These guys are pretty similar to my NAC faction so I will be able to have a more symmetrical fight than against the Crusties.

Stargrunt

I've played a couple of games of Stargrunt II and I think I like it. I really like the die-shifting main mechanic, and I like the gritty 'keep your heads down' feel of the morale rules.

There's a couple of things that feel a bit un-covered or a bit sketchy, but the rules seem pretty relaxed about making your own stuff up, so I think I will get into this and make a few more armies. The armies are a nice size, too, and you could probably get a 15mm side for thirty quid.

The Stargrunt also made me bother to finish the flickering light-effect smoke clouds I have had lined up for about a year. The effect looks pretty cool, too. Not sure I'd want to play with the lights off all the time, though.
