We had a mini tournament for Sword and Spear Fantasy at the club over xmas. Six of us played three games each over the course of the day.
We played with a few restrictions on army lists, to help things go more simply. We all had exactly 1 general, 2 captains, 1 second level wizard, a camp, and a 600 point army: no morale tests or break points, just see what the casualties’ AV total is after 6 turns. We played with ready-built tables to save time, and used scouting to decide choice of table edge.
I chose a bunch of expensive, meaty units; heavy infantry, impact cavalry, and large beasts and thought that therefore my army would be quite small compared to others. But everyone had a similar sort of idea, but more so, so I ended up with the biggest army coz I fielded a few cheap units, my crossbows and arquebuses, too. I felt that with such small armies having the extra one or two activation dice in the bag helped much more than it would with bigger armies.
It was a fun day, and although I do prefer getting the big armies out and playing long games, there is definitely something to be said for having smaller, more manageable armies and getting quick results.
Here are the army lists, more or less:

My first game I renewed hostilities with the Hyborian
barbarians from last week. I put my best units on the right, and so did my opponent, so it was a bit lopsided and predictably we lost one flank each. I managed to do a bit more damage, and my centre fortunately managed to hold on against the enveloping barbarian horse, and managed to edge the game.
The second game I played the People of the West, which looked like a scary list on paper. As it happened, my mammoths burst straight through the centre and I won massively. This was one of those games where everything goes exactly right, and all your rolls are great, and it makes you feel like a military genius.
The final game was against an Orc army, which also looked scary. My opponent fielded some regenerating trolls, which I know well from my goblin army, so I tried to engage them quickly and stop them doing whatever they wanted. My best units certainly got the worst of things, and I spent most of my magic buffing and rallying them, which kinda worked coz although they were hanging on, they didn’t flee. And I ended this with a narrow loss.
