Underworld: Wyrd Sisters

One of the more popular groups in what, let’s face it, was a pretty unpopular show, was the police force of Coal Hill station. Seen as largely honest but hapless in the first half of the season, this all changed when the three sisters Glenda, Ursula and Medea suddenly appeared on the scene.

Under the witless leadership of Sergeant Jenkins the uniformed officers of Coal Hill were left chasing their tails amidst the magic and mayhem of witch-lead, semi-organised crime. But when the wyrd sisters took over the running of the nick, the scales became more balanced.

The wyrd sisters first appeared in 1645 as ugly hags gathered around their cauldron making a foul but powerful spell. The spell successful, they managed to transform themselves into beautiful maidens. They then hit olde London towne to enjoy their new looks and model-bodies. Unfortunately, as soon as night fell, they were translated back into their ugly crone selves and discovered. About to be burned at the stake, they were mysteriously transported into the 1970s.

Posing as WPCs and using their good looks and seductive magic, the sisters easily took over Coal Hill police station. However they had to be very careful never to come out at night, and give their game away. The wyrd sisters proved very popular with viewers, partly because the scripts’ often more light-hearted approach, and partly because the leading ladies’ remarkably liberal interpretation of the police dress code.

Glenda played by Helena Mirage was the sassy, confident one, the leader of the sisters. Ursula, played by Erys Pughes, was the feisty, violent one, often laying into her opponents with only her bare hands and her strange witchy-type martial art. Medea, played by Vanessa Hyatt, was more lover than fighter, and she managed to seduce at least one member of a rival gang in every episode as well as have garments mysterious fall off her.

The wyrd sisters episodes were Wyrd is Law, Sisters in Arms, and A Wyrd in your Shell-like. They always included a comedy set piece which involved them hiding their night-time crone personas from their fellow officers, or things like hiding their bubbling cauldron in the police locked room. Medea’s date with Sergeant Jenkins being one of the highlights of the series.
