Underworld: Flowers' Powers

Here’s another underworld cast for 7TV. This one’s a little bit cheesy, but made with the Rules-As-Written, as far as I can tell, so I don’t feel too bad about it.

Rebecca Flowers was a 12 year old girl in seventeenth century England, seemingly entirely innocent of witchcraft, who gets dragged to the pyre kicking and screaming by witch hunters during the teaser to Underworld 1:05 What Are Little Girl’s Made Of? But instead of a hapless victim, we soon learn that Rebecca is a powerful witch, a cynical and manipulative one, if still extremely young.

The sky goes dark and all the villagers and soldiers disappear to be replaced by an abandoned factory* in modern ‘70s London. Rebecca is wandering through the site and appears to be about to be hit by a speeding security van when, in the nick of time, the van is ambushed by a gang of shotgun-wielding old hippies. The hippies see Rebecca and unsure what else to do with her, bring her back to their lock-up with the loot. They give her a green teddy bear-like thing and a badly painted plastic flying dinosaur toy to keep her quiet.

One thing leads to another in the bizarre setting of Underworld and Rebecca soon becomes the gang’s leader. She transforms the bear and the toy into ‘Boo**’ and ‘Flargl’, fearsome beasts that do her bidding. Rebecca then leads her gang on a string outrageously successful security van raids across London, using Boo to rip off the doors of the security vans and frighten the security guards, and using Flargl to fly around a bit.

Although this episode is otherwise rather promising, Rebecca Flowers was never used again in the show because everyone agreed that the actress playing her was utterly abysmal.

* The factory setting used for this episode was also used for episodes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 and 13 of the first and second series of Underworld as it was just around the corner from the producer’s favourite pub.

** The rubber suit for the Boo character later found its way to the BBC and after some reconditioning and a repaint made an appearance in the Doctor Who serial, The Androids of Tara.
